SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

SDG 9 ‘Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation’ aims to develop resilient and efficient infrastructures and industries whilst fostering innovation.

In the updated NDC submissions, 7% of activities addressed Goal 9 compared with 7% in the first NDC submissions. In the first NDCs, countries were prioritising targets '9.4 Upgrade infrastructure, increase resource efficiency and adopt clean technologies' (58%) and '9.1 Develop resilient and sustainable infrastructure with access for all' (27%), linking these to 'Efficient use of resources' (22%), 'Resilient infrastructures' (19%) and 'Infrastructures upgrade' (16%) as key strategies for climate action. In the updated NDCs, countries are prioritising targets '9.4 Upgrade infrastructure, increase resource efficiency and adopt clean technologies' (46%) and '9.1 Develop resilient and sustainable infrastructure with access for all' (30%), linking these to 'Infrastructures upgrade' (21%) 'Resilient infrastructures' (17%) and 'Efficient use of resources' (14%) as key strategies for climate action.

Regarding first NDC submissions, activities related to this Goal are prioritising mitigation with 49% of the activities, while 39% focus on adaptation. Meanwhile, for updated NDC submissions 49% prioritise mitigation and 49% adaptation. The share of quantified activities has increased from 7% in the first NDCs to 25% in the updated NDC submissions.
