SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production

SDG 12 ’Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns’ aims to improve production and consumption processes to ensure the protection and efficient use of natural resources by all actors.

In the updated NDC submissions, 4% of activities addressed Goal 12 compared with 4% in the first NDC submissions. In the first NDCs, countries were prioritising targets '12.5 Reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse' (47%) and '12.4 Reduce release of waste and chemicals' (40%), linking these to 'Waste management' (28%), 'Recycling and reuse' (17%) and 'Waste-to-energy development' (11%) as key strategies for climate action. In the updated NDCs, countries are prioritising targets '12.5 Reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse' (38%) and '12.4 Reduce release of waste and chemicals' (25%), linking these to 'Waste management' (19%) 'Sustainable production measures' (14%) and 'Recycling and reuse' (12%) as key strategies for climate action.

Regarding first NDC submissions, activities related to this Goal are prioritising mitigation with 73% of the activities, while 13% focus on adaptation. Meanwhile, for updated NDC submissions 71% prioritise mitigation and 71% adaptation. The share of quantified activities has increased from 5% in the first NDCs to 26% in the updated NDC submissions.
