SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 8 ’Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all’ focuses on achieving economic growth, increased productivity and full and fair employment whilst decoupling economic growth from environment degradation.

In the updated NDC submissions, 3% of activities addressed Goal 8 compared with 4% in the first NDC submissions. In the first NDCs, countries were prioritising targets '8.4 Promote resource efficiency to decouple growth and degradation' (36%) and '8.2 Achieve higher levels of economic productivity through various measures' (22%), linking these to 'Low-carbon economy' (25%), 'Sustainable tourism development' (13%) and 'Green economy' (12%) as key strategies for climate action. In the updated NDCs, countries are prioritising targets '8.9 Promote sustainable tourism that supports local livelihoods' (24%) and '8.10 Strengthen financial institutions and access to financial services and insurance' (18%), linking these to 'Sustainable tourism development' (18%) 'Access to finance' (18%) and 'Unemployment reduction' (13%) as key strategies for climate action.

Regarding first NDC submissions, activities related to this Goal are prioritising adaptation with 38% of the activities, while 31% focus on mitigation. Meanwhile, for updated NDC submissions 53% prioritise adaptation and 53% mitigation. The share of quantified activities has decreased from 9% in the first NDCs to 8% in the updated NDC submissions.
