SDG 5 – Gender Equality

SDG 5 ‘Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls’ focuses on empowering women whilst ending harmful practices and discrimination that have been preventing gender equality.

In the updated NDC submissions, 3% of activities addressed Goal 5 compared with 1% in the first NDC submissions. In the first NDCs, countries were prioritising targets '5.5 Women's leadership at all levels' (59%) and '5.1 End discrimination against women' (28%), linking these to 'Integration of gender considerations in policy design' (46%), 'Protection of women from climate change risks' (29%) and 'Female participation' (17%) as key strategies for climate action. In the updated NDCs, countries are prioritising targets '5.1 End discrimination against women' (43%) and '5.5 Women's leadership at all levels' (41%), linking these to 'Integration of gender considerations in policy design' (37%) 'Female participation' (26%) and 'Strengthened female skills' (15%) as key strategies for climate action.

Regarding first NDC submissions, activities related to this Goal are prioritising adaptation with 46% of the activities, while 7% focus on mitigation. Meanwhile, for updated NDC submissions 45% prioritise adaptation and 6% mitigation. The share of quantified activities has increased from 0% in the first NDCs to 4% in the updated NDC submissions.
